Ahhh… Tuesday nights

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

It’s 7:30 in the evening… I’ve eaten dinner, taken my makeup off, put my pjs on… the kids are at a friend’s house and Rob just left for a meeting. I’m getting ready to brew a pot of decaf Hawaiian Hazelnut coffee and settle in to watch American Idol (go Taylor – Soul Patrol! Ha!)… this is the life.

I just tried that Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm. I don’t like it so much. I mean, it’s not bad or anything, but it doesn’t have the tingle from the peppermint oil that the traditional lip balm has and I miss it. This one does have a nice honey scent to it, though, and it still feels smooth and soothing on the lips. Just not tingly. Gotta have the tingly.

I’m still interviewing people for that position at work. We have two strong candidates that are coming back for a 2nd interview and a hands-on programming test on Thursday… but today. Today I had one of the worst candidates ever come in for an interview. I am surprised that some of these people are currently employed. It amazes me that they landed jobs with their interviewing skills. If they can get a job, anyone can get a job. I’m serious. It gives me hope if I ever need to get back on the market.

Rob was playing some songs on iTunes tonight and that song Shake My Tree by Coverdale/Page came on. OMG. Remember that song? I had almost forgotten about them even getting together to form a band. That song was the jam. Jimmy Page is one helluva guitar player.

Hey – what would cause a burner to stop working on an electric stove? We had one go out a while ago and now another one this week. We have to get this fixed before we move out of this place next month. Any ideas??

And…. time!

I am so bummed that the television season is coming to an end. What am I going to do on my free nights now? Talk to my family or something? Are you kidding me??? ;-)

Last night was the Desperate Housewives finale. While this show is still good, it’s no where near as intriguing as it was the first season. That was pretty hard to top, though. I’m curious why there was no Edie in the finale, though. They had two whole hours, they couldn’t fit her in there somewhere? Weird. And I’m not so crazy about this new Orson character.

In two weeks The Sopranos and Big Love will come to an end. Is it me or did that season go by super fast? It seems like we just started watching! Like mose Sopranos fans, I’m not so impressed with this season. I hate to admit it, but I like all the violent, gritty stuff… give me some mobster action, not all this touchy-feely crap. I can watch that on other shows. I’m glad Vito is dead, at least, so that storyline can die. Big Love is one of those shows you think you’re going to hate, but the characters and the acting really draw you in. I find myself thinking about the characters all during the week at random moments. The funniest thing about that show is – it makes me realize I could never be a polygamist and I think there are some serious problems with people who live that lifestyle… BUT, when I watch the show, I root for them and I think the regular LDS people are mean for hating on the polys. Good writing, I guess.

So all these shows are ending, but there’s something to look forward to: Deadwood! Even though this will most likely be the final season and that alone makes me not even want to watch it now… I will still be watching because I just love that show. Love it.

Man, I never thought I’d be such a TV fiend! In other news, we close on our house in 8 days. It’s coming up fast! Everything is going well, all of our ducks are in a row and I think we’re in good shape. I just hope there are no surprises once we get there. The good news is, we don’t have to be out of our current house until the end of June, so if anything comes up, we have plenty of time to deal with it.

The burn on my hand is healing – some blisters popped and now I’m mostly dealing with dry skin. It’s like a really bad sunburn on there now. It’s actually pretty nasty. My pinky, ring finger and middle finger got the burns, with my ring finger bearing the brunt of it. I’m hoping to be able to wear my wedding band again before the week is out.

Yesterday my sister had a Mary Kay party. That was fun just because we got to do girly stuff… but I am not a big fan of the Mary Kay makeup. I did order some of their age-defying skin care line. I need all the help I can get in that department! I’ll report back on my results with those in a few weeks.

I think that’s enough randomness to catch you up with me for now. :-)

Going to the chapel…

I forgot to tell you in my last post that we threw a surprise bridal shower for my sister last weekend that turned out great! There are lots of pictures from it here. My baby sister is getting married in just about 1 month. I’m still sad that I won’t be going to the wedding (in Antigua)… the timing really sucks! If she was doing this 6 months later, we probably could have swung it… but there is no way we can do it with also buying a house. Oh well. She’s having a reception in early July when they get back, so that should be fun. She’s doing a casual, island theme. We stuck to that for her shower, too.

Whew!

I’ve had a busy few days! Let’s see… yesterday I nearly blew my hand off in a Darwinesque grill accident. D’oh! I am being dramatic, of course, but um? Ouch! That hurt. A lot. I didn’t realize that once you turn on the propane tank, you need to light the grill IMMEDIATELY, not open the new lighter, try to figure out the child-proofing method to get the lighter to light and then light the grill. Note: the latter method causes a mini-explosion to occur right through the same hole you have the lighter, which is attached to your hand, in. Good times, good times.

Luckily the burn wasn’t too bad. I spent the night alternating between soaking in a bowl of water and resting on an ice pack in addition to drugging myself mercilessly with Ibuprofren and Ex. Strength Tylenol. I fully expected to be woken up by the pain in the middle of the night, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I woke up this morning stunned that my hand barely hurt at all! It still tingles this morning and it’s certainly red and “smooth” in areas where my other hand has wrinkles and hair (ha!), but it’s not overtly painful. I don’t know if it’s because I took such good care of it last night or what, but I am thankful.

Before that little escapade though, I had a very nice day yesterday. I took the day off to help a friend move. That doesn’t sound pleasant, I know, but it actually was. She works for a construction company, so she has laborers come and do all the heavy-duty stuff. We just had to do some light cleaning and unpacking and putting away of all her stuff. It is so easy to move a single woman as opposed to a family of four. As I was unpacking yesterday, I kept telling myself that we really need to pare down our belongings so our upcoming move won’t be so much work. Yeah, I don’t see that happening. Anyway, yesterday’s weather was just absolutely gorgeous and I got to spend the day with two of my best friends in the whole world, so doing a little manual labor was no problem whatsoever. We actually had fun helping! Oh, and my friend has moved into such a great neighborhood near Rittenhouse Square – I found myself wondering what my life would be like if I was single and decided to move downtown. I complain to my friend all the time that I am not a city girl, but if my circumstances were different, I think I could be one with no problem at all. I like the hustle and bustle of the city and being so near to cultural things. Alas, I don’t think it’s in the cards for me any time soon. Instead, I’m preparing for my big move to another section of the ‘burbs – and that’s just fine. P.S. – we close in 12 days!

So today it’s back to work. I’ve become increasingly unhappy here due to a few things that have happened recently and I’m just trying my best to remember that it’s pretty normal to not like your job. I’m just not used to this. Hopefully this, too, shall pass.

Deadwood is… dead?

Friday, May 12th, 2006

Man, this really sucks. I love, love, love Deadwood! Why do all the good shows get taken off the air?
