Monday. Already?

Monday, June 12th, 2006

I have had this posting window open all day long. It is 3:38 and I’m just now able to actually type something in here!

I had a new employee start today. That is always so draining and time-consuming. We need to develop a technology where we clone little worker bots with knowledge of only the job that has to be done. On the first day of the job, the new worker gets charged and voila – trained employee ready to work!

In other newness – I started a new food plan today. This plan is even stricter than the plan I was on before. Yikes! I am expecting to have more energy and finally get rid of the last 10 pounds, though. I’ll be sure to let you know how that goes.

Can you believe my kids got sick AGAIN? Connor, oh my poor Connor, he had a field trip to the Spirit of Philadelphia on Friday. He was looking forward to this for months and months, telling me about it every day, counting down the days, etc. I got a call a little after 3 on Friday – he had been throwing up all day. :-( He was sick before they even left, but he still wanted to go, so he told his teacher he would be fine as long as he had some water. He wasn’t fine, but he stayed out there all day. I asked him why no one called earlier and he said he knew there was nothing we could do if they called. “What would you do? Drive out onto the Delaware?” Funny kid. So anyway, his trip was ruined, but he felt better on Saturday. However, Aric threw up on Saturday and felt really bad all day and night.

I don’t know what the heck is going on – if all the cleaning and packing is kicking up germs or something?? But, I am tired of us all being sick! It’s like we’re being poisoned or something. Thankfully Rob and I didn’t get it this time.

I spent a lot of the weekend Stumbling. I found some great sites. Here are some highlights:

Vox

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

So Geeky hooked me up with a Vox account. I hadn’t heard of it until this morning, but I’m playing with it now. For those who don’t know, Vox is a brand new space to record your life, express your interests, and pull friends and family together. (I copied that right from their site. Heh.) It’s brought to you by the Six Apart folks and it seems tightly integrated with Flickr or something… who knows. It just seems pretty cool and hip and since we all know that I am the epitome of cool and hip, I am so there.

Here’s my Vox blog URL: http://anaisamy.vox.com/

I’ve got invites to give away, but you have to ask nicely.

I know I’m probably the last person on the planet using BlogRolling, but I don’t care. What the heck happened to it? The site is just… gone? The hell?

Illness

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

This week has been one of the most surreal weeks in my life. On Monday night, Rob came down with a bad virus; throwing up and having diarrhea about every 1/2 hour. On Tuesday, we closed on our house. Lucikly, Rob was well enough by then to at least be a passenger and sign the paperwork. On Wednesday, Aric came down with the same virus. On Thursday, Rob stayed home with Aric and I travelled to NYC on business. I don’t normally do a lot of travelling for business, so it was weird to be driving 2 hours to NY on a work day. I started to not feel so well and cut the day short. I came home and promptly fell asleep for a few hours. On Friday, I stayed home with Aric and by Friday night, I (surprise, surprise!) had come down with the virus, too! Saturday was a blur, but I did start to feel better by the evening. Today I’m mostly better, just weak.

I’m hoping this week is back to normal somewhat!

The Green Stuff

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

When we were little, my brother and I used to count our money over and over again. We’d count the bills and set them in a pile. Then we’d count each coin denomination, setting them in their own designated piles all over the floor. After we’d get done counting, we’d usually just sit and look at it, marveling at the power all those piles held for us. Then our thoughts would soon turn to how we could make more or how we’d spend it. I usually wanted to go buy something right that very minute. He usually wanted to save some more, save for something bigger and better. Occasionally we’d flip-flop on this, but for the most part, I was the spender and he was the miser. As we got older, I got better at saving. I had my own checking and savings accounts at 17 because I started working at a bank. And he liked to keep his money under the mattress. I’m not kidding about this. He had a huge mistrust of banking institutions and was especially not thrilled that they would charge fees if the balance wasn’t high enough. He still counted his money frequently and so did I, but in a different way now. I had to look into a computer screen to see my balance. I’d check it at least once every time I worked, that green glow comforting me as it flashed my name and numbers up on the screen.

Over the past little while, I’ve noticed Aric is a lot like my brother. He stored his money in hidden compartments around his room, always taking it out at night to count it. Watching this brought back such fond memories and also made me chuckle because I knew what was going through his mind: maybe this time when I count, there will be more! Last week, before I headed to the bank to get a cashier’s check for our house settlement, I asked Aric if he wanted to go with me. He said he wanted to, but only if he could open up his own account. I immediately realized he wasn’t as much like my brother as I thought – instead, this little guy is a whole like his mama!

I told him to get his money and he returned with a pillow case. He dumped the contents out on our coffee table and we set about the ritualistic creation of piles. He had about $53 and he was very pleased with that number. We headed to the bank where we got the cashier’s check and Aric waited patiently. Then I inquired about savings accounts for kids – was there a minimum balance? Would there be fees? Negative to both, so we were in business. The next step was choosing which type of account: passbook or statement. There was no contest, he’d get the passbook so he’d have something in hand at all times telling him how much money he had. I do believe that passbook is underneath his pillow and I’d bet money from my checking account that he glances at the total every night before falling asleep, hoping that somehow the number had magically increased since the last time he looked.

Looking back over my financial history, I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that Aric seems to have inherited my money habits. Time will tell, but before it does, I’m going to enjoy reminiscing vicariously through him.
