I read a post over at Statia’s today about some drama or other in the blogosphere where a site has been created to make fun of popular bloggers which has Photoshopped pictures of the popular bloggers’ kids on it. I haven’t seen the offending site and I’m getting that info straight from Statia’s blog, so I can’t talk with much authority about the incident in particular. However, I did find it interesting to learn that some people have taken a stance insisting there will never be photos of their children available through their blogs – not necessarily as a result of this incident, but that’s just their personal choice.
Now, I haven’t been targeted – no one has ever manipulated photos of my kids in any way in the 10 years I’ve been sharing them online – perhaps I would feel differently if that weren’t true. I don’t know, I suspect it wouldn’t make me change my position – which is that I couldn’t care less if people were doing as they pleased with pictures of me or my family. I probably wouldn’t particularly like it, but I don’t know that it would make me want to stop sharing my photos with my blog readers or elsewhere online, either. I just don’t see how it can have any lasting affects on us. I mean – it’s all virtual… for all you know, every photo I share on here is Photoshopped.
I still think it’s messed up that people would take the time to set up a site and then get photos of bloggers’ kids to manipulate and post. If you’ve got a problem with someone online and truly can’t resist the urge to do something juvenile like that, at least pick on the person you’ve got a problem with, not their kids. That’s just wrong. But if you do happen to pick on me and use my kids’ photos to spew your venom, you’re not going to intimidate me into changing my ways.
I’m curious – what is your take on this? Where do you stand?
I know there are messed up people all over the blogosphere and the internet in general. I can’t tell you how many searches have brought people to particular pictures on my site for things like, “Kids in the bathtub” and “Naked children” and stuff – usually with the word “fucking” along with it. Obviously, I still post pictures of my kids online. Even though someone ripped off all my pregnancy belly pictures and ultrasound pictures and tried to pretend she was me, I’m still just like…ehhhh. I think I have way too many pressing things in my REAL world, the one with actual people and places and events, the one that goes on outside of this little box, that I just really don’t give a shit much about the assclowns. There are always going to be people who act stupid, and there will always be comment trolls, and people who can talk shit like crazy behind an anonymous nickname. It sucks that people are SO low as to pick on innocent children – and I am certain it would piss me right off if someone were doing that to pictures of my kids – but I think I’d get over it really quickly. People are just going to be stupid no matter what, y’know?
Laura said it all perfectly! It’d tick me off for a short bit, but I would get over it and I certainly wouldn’t change my ways.
It still amazes me that people would pull others children into this. That’s just so slimy and immature. NICE.
I’ve never had a problem posting pics of my kids on my blog or elsewhere on the net. I don’t do it too much anymore, but that’s because they’re older and don’t change and do cute things like they used to.
If someone wants to mess with pics of my kids…..so be it. It’s THEIR fucked-up problem and won’t affect my kids or me in the least.
It’s amazingly scary how much time and occasionally sick effort some people put into their little internet world!
I agree with Darla – it’s their problem not mine, and regardless of WHAT anyone could do to a picture of my kids, it’s not like my kids would ever see it or be harmed by it, kwim? I post all kinds of pics online from my kids, to my house, to vacations – wont stop me at all lol
