I see Rob blogged about this already, but I want to brag on my baby, too. Aric has always struggled with school. For the longest time we were convinced the had some sort of learning disability just because he struggles so much with basic concepts. There have been signs of dyslexia and I’ve been all over the Internet looking at different forms of LDs to try to figure out what his deal is.
While I’m not ruling anything out, it seems that Aric’s biggest problem is a lack of applying himself. Over the holiday break, Rob worked with Aric every single day on his times tables and other math concepts because he was failing math going into the break. Today Aric had his first math test after getting back from the break. We gave him all sorts of tips like making sure he took his time, skipping over the questions he didn’t know immediately and going back to them if he had the time and to concentrate. The teacher graded the tests immediately and had Aric stand up so she could tell the whole class that he got a 100%!! Aric said all the kids clapped for him and that it was “really cool”. I’m so proud of him! And I’m so proud of Rob, too, for being persistent with Aric and helping him out with his struggles. Aric and I sort of have a clash of wills when I try to help him out, so I’m glad he can work well with Rob.
So now we’ll just have to see what the future holds – maybe he just needs extra studying time. Or maybe he needs additional help. Time will tell.
Congratulations, Aric!!! That is so cool! It sounds like he and Rob may have a winning combination going!
Yay Aric!!!
My oldest and I struggle with wills all the time. He’s a very stubborn 15 year old going through puberty and doesn’t want to apply himself at all. Frustrating.
3 of my 6 kids have learning disabilities. My oldest has it in math. He just doesn’t get abstract concepts. My other two were better in math but their reading disabilities made homework or studying in any subject impossible.
From my experience, it’s better to have them tested to be sure one way or the other. One son was not tested until high school because the teachers thought he was just a discipline problem. The LD was causing him to misbehave – he couldn’t read the books in front of him.
I use to tutor on the side and had several kids fit this description. Sometimes they just need the extra one on one help which they aren’t going to ask for at school (because it is embarrassing).
Wish I lived closer to you. I would do some tutoring for you for free. :)
WOW!! Congratulations, Aric! WTG, Rob!!
(THIS was definitely “board-worthy”, woman!)
OMG! WTG Aric!!!! That is terrific, Amy! I had tears in my eyes reading that- I can only imagine how you and Rob felt!
