Rabified

Grace is all rabified! Or anit-rabified. Or something. She had 3 shots yesterday, concluding her rabies series. She got a bunch of other inoculations in there, too, but I can’t remember any of the others except for Lyme. We switched vets for this visit because the first place we went to had all English-as-second language doctors who were terribly hard to understand and who didn’t seem to take a very big interest in Grace. Rob and I both want to have a good repoire and relationship with a vet, not just have it be a place to have the shots and be in and out as fast as possible. The new vet’s office seems to be a winner, I’m happy to report. They all welcomed Grace to the office with open arms and couldn’t get enough Grace lovin’. That’s what I’m talking about.

Grace weighs 26.5 pounds at 14 weeks, so she gained about 7 pounds in the past month. She also has a yeast infection in her right ear. We knew she had gunk in there and were cleaning it out with a tissue, but it really smelled and didn’t think it was right. The last vet said it was “just dirt”. Yeah. So now we have ear drops to clear up the infection, ear cleaner with instructions to clean her ears 2-3x per week and her ear smells better already. Oh, we also started her heartworm medication. It was a pretty eventful visit for our little baby! And after $171, it was an eventful visit for my wallet, too.

Her next visit will likely cost even more, as she’ll go back at 6 months to get spayed.

Did you ever think I would be writing 3 paragraph blog entries on a dog vet visit? Heh!

The ear thing – labs, and all dogs with “floppy ears”, are really prone to that. Smokey struggled with it for a while. We’d do the drops and antibiotics, the symptoms would clear up, only to return later. After a while, our vet recommended we change her diet to only lamb and rice food. Worked like a charm and we haven’t had any issues since.

Wow, she’s going to be as big as your boys pretty soon! LOL

I’m glad you found a vet you’re happier with. We’ve been with our vet for over 20 years. We love him. He knows I’m a pain in the ass when Duffy gets her UTI and constipation issues and knows how to ‘handle’ me.

He’s so nice that he didn’t even charge us to put Casper and Rooney down. He said we did everything we could for them when they were alive, always bringing them in instead of ignoring them (he says MANY pet owners are not pro-active…sad), so he said it was a privilege to ‘help’ them when their bodies wore out from old age.

If you haven’t already you should check into the kennel cough vacine as well, especially if you are going to taking Grace to training school. I adopted Cosmo for about $200 and spent at least $700 on his first six months on visits, vaccines and his neutering. Having the right vet is crucial. We run into some of the vet’s office people around town and I love it when they recognize me as “Cosmo’s mom”.

Yeast infections are nasty for anyone–human or animal. Good thing you took her to another vet. She’ll be feeling better real soon.

Our cat recently had an itching problem. I didn’t think much of except to check for fleas–none–until she ended up with raw spots on her neck. A visit to the vet revealed a fever and ear infection, too. The itching was likely an allergic reaction, probably to her food. (We’d accidentally had a food change when I bought the wrong kind at the store because the bags looked the same and the food was the same kind–only a different brand.)

After a cortisone shot to stop the itching and a week on antibiotics, she returned to normal. We switched her food to one without animal by-products and corn, and voila! A very happy cat.

Who says it’s weird to blog about our animals? They’re important too!
