So the American Idol website has wrong info on there – saying tonight’s show would be 90s songs. However, the theme turned out to be “Gwen’s Favorite Pop Songs”. That’s kind of crappy since I wrote that huge post earlier predicting what they’d all sing. Oh well, on with the show!
Wow, Gwen Stefani looks so different without the heavy makeup! She is such a cute girl.
LaKisha Jones is up first singing “Last Dance” by Donna Summers. What is up with that dress? It looks like some curtains from the 70s. I didn’t love her singing that much in this song, but she did do a good job. The judges really liked it, but I thought she was a little off in parts.
Chris Sligh on next singing “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by the Police. This song really showcased his vocals a lot, but wow, was his timing off! I think you’re either born with the timing or you’re not and he apparently wasn’t.
Gina Glocksen chose to sing “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders and she gave me chills. That’s not easy when doing a Chrissy Hynde vocal, either! Very impressed with this, nicely done. She just stood there and sang her heart out. Loved it.
Sanjaya Malakar is singing “Bathwater” by No Doubt. Oh this ought to be rich! I read a bunch of stuff online today about Gwen hating him, and it showed in her little cameo before he came on. She basically said, “Yeah, good luck with that. BAHAHAHA” OH MY GAH!!!!! WHAT IS THAT HAIR??? Oh lordy. That looks like my hair in 10th grade in a banana clip! Ryan called it a “ponyhawk”. This kid just loves the tortuous attention he’s been receiving, I think. Oh wow. This is so horrifyingly awful, the kids and I are just sitting here laughing. If all the Vote For the Worst people keep this guy here again another week, I will have to give them their props. The judges have to know about this thing, because they are not even trying to give honest feedback.
Haley Scarnato is singing “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. If she just stands sits there and sings like Gina did, she might do good with this. Okay, so she didn’t take that approach. It’s so hard to not compare to the original, and Cyndi Lauper’s unique voice. Haley’s voice is so boring in comparison. I didn’t love it.
Phil Stacey is going to sing “Every Breath You Take” by the Police. Gwen was surprised by how well he sang this in rehearsal and I’m surprised, too. He did Sting 10x better than Chris Sligh did. Very nice. And he covered up that mug of his with a knit cap – nice touch.
Melinda Doolittle chose to sing “Heaven Knows” by Donna Summers. She and LaKisha are wearing outfits from the same line, I guess. Hate it. She did a great job with the song, though. No surprises there. This girl is going to be in the finals, for sure.
Blake Lewis is going to sing “Love Song” by the Cure. This should be interesting! Hey, I finally figured out who he looks like – Simon LeBon! He’s too short, though, poor thing. He chose to just sing without any beatboxing tonight! I like that. He needed to switch it up, and he did. I liked this performance so much. He’s just so charismatic.
Jordin Sparks is next to last singing “Hey Baby” by No Doubt in a Dorothy school girl get-up. Her vocal wasn’t stunning, but for some reason her performance itself gave me the chills. I think it’s because I’m seeing a star in the making. There’s something about this girl!
Chris Richardson is wrapping up the show with “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt. This started out incredibly weak, but he finished strong. I wanted to hate it, but it actually wasn’t half bad. It reminded me of a George Michael song and performance.
In danger tonight: Sanjaya (I wish!), Haley and Chris Sligh.

please sanjaya. if i could take two it would be hayley as well.
Nice review! Love the clothing comments you always give too.
Great review! Seriously I thought I was gonna die from laughter over the Sanjaya hair!!!
Sanjaya, Sanjaya, Sanjaya….
He’s actually getting a little cocky now… did you hear what he said to Simon about how he wishes he could carry that hairdo off? I have to wonder if Sanjaya purposely wore that ridiculous hair as if to say “I can do no wrong, and I will never get voted off, no matter how bad I do or how stupid I look”. I agree w/ your assesment about Jordin. Even if she does not win Idol (I think Melinda may win it all) she’s going places.
I’m still going back and forth between Lakisha and Gina, but I voted for Lakisha last night. I was stunned when Gwen told her she should be taking lessons from her! That was such a great compliment. Lakisha ROCKS, and she had her boobs covered. I was happy.
Sanjaya is just a waste of space, and I hope Simon and the other producers step up, and get rid of him. He’s an embarrassment to the show. But the ratings are soaring, so…it’s all about the money, right!?
I know – Sanjaya feels he’s untouchable because of the Vote For the Worst thing, I think!
Julie – how would the producers step up and do that?
