I’m always excited when it’s American Idol night, but I’m really excited today! Gwen Stefani is going to be on this week, being the coach for the singers as they do songs from the 90s and then she’ll be performing tomorrow. Can’t wait! I just love her. I wonder which song she’ll do?
I also wonder which songs the contestants will sing tonight.
I predict Gina will do some Alanis Morissette or Tori Amos. Or even possibly Sheryl Crow. I think the best songs for her to sing would be “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” by Sophie B. Hawkins, “Criminal” by Fiona Applie or “What’s Up?” by 4 Non-Blondes. She might even do some Melissa Etheridge some justice.
Haley will probably do something really embarrassing like Mariah Carey. I can see her doing a poor imitation of “Fantasy”. Or maybe she’ll try a Britney Spears number. That could get interesting. I don’t even know what would be a good song for her since I’m not a fan of her singing. But if I had to pick, I’d say maybe “Linger” by the Cranberries.
My main man, Blake, is sure to come out with something totally jamming. I can see him doing some Boyz II Men or UB40, but what I’d love to see him do is “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees or “Connected” by the Stereo MCs. I’m not sure if he has the range for the falsetto in some parts or the Fugees song, but I bet he could pull it off.
I hope at least one person does a No Doubt song. If anyone can get away with it, I think Jordin can. I’d love to see her do “Don’t Speak”, “My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It)” by EnVogue or “Foolish Games” by Jewel. She could probably also do a nice job with “Adia” by Sarah McLachlan.
LaKisha has that big ole voice, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she did the biggest song from the 90s – “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. I’m sure she’d do a good job with it, but I think I’d like to hear her sing “Unbreak My Heart” by Toni Braxton or even possibly some Celine Dion.
Chris Richardson is the epitome of boy band to me, so I can’t see him doing anything but the Backstreet Boys. Although, he might do some PM Dawn or All-4-One. It would be great to see him break out of his mold and do something like “Mr. Jones” by the Counting Crows or “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin. Wouldn’t it be fabulous to see him running around the stage? heh. Actually, you know what song would be great for his voice? “Wonderwall” by Oasis.
If anyone is going to do Hootie and the Blowfish, I predict it will be Chris Sligh, but I could also see him doing some Boyz II Men. I think it’d be a hoot if he came out doing “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio or “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J, though. I bet if he did “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton or “Losing My Religion” by REM, it would win him some votes.
What will Melinda do? I’d love her to sing “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman or “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor. I could also see her doing “Waterfalls” by TLC.
The 90s seems to be a good genre for Phil Stacey. He could do any one of these pretty well, I think: “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum, “I Alone” by Live, “More Than Words” by Extreme,” “Kiss From a Rose” by Seal, or “Remedy” by the Black Crowes. If I were a betting woman, I’d put my money on that last one.
And Sanjaya. Ai yi yi, Sanjaya. As painful as he is to watch and listen to, there are actually quite a few 90s songs that suit him. I’d be highly entertained if he did “MMMBop” by Hanson, “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer, “Black or White” by Michael Jackson or by personal faves – The Macarena or TubThumping. Totally!
With so many good songs to choose from, it should be a good show tonight. Here’s hoping!

Wow… that’s a great list. I’m excited about tonight’s theme… didn’t care too much for the last one. Should be interesting!
I’m pretty excited for tonights show also. Chris Sligh singing “Losing My Religion†would be AWESOME!
You called it right for Lakisha for sure. I would love to hear what she can do with those songs. I look forward to her and my other faves… I also want to see if they do any of the songs you have talked about here. I think you have a good ear for figuring out who can sing what well.
