Racism in the Deep South – Jena 6 Travesty

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

You might think that in the year 2007 things like a “tree just for white kids to sit under” wouldn’t exist in America. I know I certainly believed that to be true. Sadly, I was gravely mistaken. You see, that segregated tree – and town – does, indeed, exist today. That town is Jena, Louisiana, where a travesty of yesteryear’s proportions is being played out.

From the ColorOfChange website, here’s what sparked the injustices that are going on today:

Last fall in Jena, Louisiana, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the “white tree” on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a “prank,” more Black students sat under the tree in protest. The District Attorney then came to the school accompanied by the town’s police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, “I can be your best friend or your worst enemy… I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen.”1

A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Much more has happened since those 6 black students were charged, the basic gist of it being these kids have been in jail with bail set so high they can’t get released, and the court cases are resulting in ridiculously long sentences with extremely shoddy public defenses. Please take the time to read the whole story to educate yourself on this outrageous, racist mess.

You can help. There is a peaceful march being held on September 20th in Jena. If you’re in that area, please consider participating. The kids need help for their legal funds, so if you are able, please consider donating. Another alternative is writing the Governor of Louisiana. Finally, please take a moment to sign the Jena 6 online petition requesting the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice investigate this matter.

Consider blogging about this to help spread the word. Marisa and Suni have started an online blogging drive to raise awareness in the blogging community about this horrible injustice.

Collapsible Cups

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of spending a bunch of time with a group of recovering food addicts. We were together for the whole weekend, so we had to go out to eat a few times. You haven’t lived until you’ve gone to a restaurant with 10 recovering food addicts who all have special needs regarding their food. To top it off, we went to Chinatown of all places. We spent a good deal of time walking into different restaurants just to ask if they had brown rice. Do you know I walked into a place that had a tank of live frogs sitting in front? ICK!

When the food came, people were whipping out food scales, measuring cups and spoons, and spices seemingly out of nowhere. I was seriously impressed with how prepared some people were – especially compared to me! I knew there would be plenty of food scales, so I didn’t even bring one of those. Yes, I am that person: the food scale moocher. I really need to get a better digital pocket scale so I can stop being that person. I’ve never been one to bring my measuring cup out to a restaurant, they’re just too cumbersome to be carrying around. However, that all changed today.

One of the girls we went to dinner with had one of these collapsible cups that just blew my little mind. The cups collapse to lay flat for storage and then pop open when you need to use them to measure. No more excuses for not having a measuring cup with me when I’m out. I got those and the cool swivel measuring spoons, too, at Williams-Sonoma. You have no idea how excited I am about these cups. It felt like Christmas morning around here today. I couldn’t wait to get home to just hold the cups in my hand and expand and collapse them endlessly as I marveled at the ingenuity of people. Why can’t I think of something like this?

The Moody Blues

Monday, September 10th, 2007

XM Channel 46 was playing some good tunes on my way into work this morning. The last song I heard was “The Afternoon” by The Moody Blues. This is the second time I’ve heard it on XM, and before then I never knew this song had such a cool extended version that gets cut off on traditional radio. I’ve never owned any Moody Blues albums, obviously. That song is so good, though, isn’t it? The harmonies are incredible. I love any song that features minor chords, it seems, so it’s no surprise this one really resonates with me. I got to thinking – whatever happened to The Moody Blues? I mean you just don’t hear about them any more. So I checked their website and guess what? They’re still touring! Granted, the venues are pretty small, but they’re going to be in Toms River, NJ on October 27th. I wonder if Rob is interested in seeing them – he’s not one for the hippy music so much, so this is kind of doubtful. Then again, sometimes he surprises me.

Oh shoot! I just researched further… that show is completely sold out, which is mind boggling because the tickets started at $78 and went all the way up to $258! Dang. Guess there are some hard core Moody Blues fans.

Switching Wardrobes

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

It’s that time of year again. Time to start switching out the summer clothes and shoes with the fall stuff. It’s always kind of awkward going from one season to the next. God forbid I have a fashion faux pas and wear white shoes or pants now that Labor Day has passed. Who comes up with these rules, anyway? I also feel weird wearing sandals now that it’s almost mid-September, but it’s still hot has heck out there, so sandals it is.

I got an email that Shoes.com is having a Saturday sale today, so I started browsing through… and a lot of sandals are on sale, but I honestly don’t need another pair of summer shoes. My closets are already overrun with them. I will need some new fall and winter shoes though, I’m sure of it. The only problem is, I forget what I already have, so I need to go through the boxes first before I buy anything. Since I’m still feeling dizzy and tired, I don’t know that I’ll be going through any shoe boxes today. Guess that means I’ll have to pass on the Saturday sale. Oh well. There will be more, I’m sure.

So I’m curious. Do you follow the general fashion rules? Things like no white shoes before Memorial Day or after Labor Day?

Dizzy Again

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

I woke up dizzy again this morning. I haven’t had this problem for months, so I was surprised when it happened. I immediately ran to the medicine cabinet for some Antivert until I remembered Grace ate all of them. I settled on a Zyrtec instead. After I ate breakfast, I made sure to do the Neti pot and Sinus Buster regimen – that’s something I didn’t do yesterday.

Earlier this week our air conditioning stopped working and we had to put in a call for service. It turns out that our unit is just old and we can’t run it at 70 degrees 24 hours a day – which is fine by me! I’m always freezing while everyone else in the house is comfortable. What happened when we ran it for so long at the temperature is the unit froze. Or so we thought since we saw some icing on the pipes. After turning the system back on for a few hours, the temperature in the house wasn’t really getting any cooler, so Rob decided to take a better look at the unit in the attic. (We’ve got a unit outside and one in the attic.) Turns out there was a side panel that wasn’t on completely and the entire attic was being cooled, but not the rest of the house. After Rob replaced that panel, the house started cooling down immediately.

Now I’m wondering if there is something in the vents that is causing Aric and I a lot of sinus and allergy related misery. He is a mess this morning, snotting and snorting all over the place. His face has “that look” when his allergies have flared up and I wouldn’t take no for an answer when I told him to take a Zyrtec, too. He is usually pretty reluctant to take medicine, preferring to “tough it out” instead. He also used the Sinus Buster spray, but I wish he would use the Neti pot to cleanse his sinuses of the debris that is obviously circulating through our house right now.

Since I haven’t taken Zyrtec in a few months, my body isn’t used to its effects. It’s been about an hour since I swallowed that little white pill and already I’m getting very, very sleepy. I hate this.
