Buh Bye Sanjaya!

He’s gone!!! wOOt!!! I seriously thought I was going to cry when I saw it was him going home last night. Thank you, America, for finally doing the right thing. Though if you let Blake be in the bottom three again, we’re going to have to talk.

American Idol - Country Edition

Filed Under (Forever Young, Tunes) by Amy on 17-04-2007

Tonight is country night as the contestants get mentored by Martina McBride. I’m not a huge fan of country music, so I’m not thrilled about the show, but hopefully it’ll be better than I expect.

Phil Stacey is up first singing “Where the Blacktop Ends” by Keith Urban. He’s hatless again this week, so millions of Americans will be distracted by his huge misshapen head. He did a pretty good job, but he is so damn stiff. Even when he’s trying real hard to not be stiff it doesn’t work. He’s got a real nice voice, though. The judges loved it - I wonder if they’re in a generous mood tonight.

My girl Jordin Sparks is up next singing “A Broken Wing” by Martina McBride herself. How much do I love Jordin? She is just adorable. And whoa, does she look sultry tonight. I’m not sure I’m in love with the gold lame’ thing going on with her dress, but the overall effect with her dress, makeup and jewelry works. Oh and her singing? Kicked ass. Simply beautiful. She just stood there and sang her heart out. If this is what country music sounds like, I’m a fan. And Simon gives his “you could win the competition” line to Jordin - unsurprisingly. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt her, though.

Ryan says Sanjaya Malakar is going to give us something to talk about. Is he doing the Bonnie Raitt song? No matter what he does, you know it’s going to be, uh, interesting. Oh.My.Word. Look at that bandana! And, he is doing “Let’s Give Them Something To Talk About”, hoping to do Bonnie Raitt justice. Somehow I doubt that’s going to happen. What a mess that was. Lordy. America, are we tired of this silliness yet? Please.

I want to see what LaKisha Jones does with “Jesus Take The Wheel” by Carrie Underwood. I guess the stylists are into the gold lame’ this week! Those boots are blinding me! She looks gorgeous tonight, even with the whole lame’ treatment. I liked part of her vocal, but not all of it. I agree with the judges that it wasn’t the best she’s done. I think her lisp is getting worse every week, too. I do think it’s unfair to tell her she picked a bad song, though, and needed to pick something more suited to her when it’s friggin’ country week.

Junior Justin Timberlake, I mean Chris Richardson is up singing “Mayberry” by Rascal Flatts. Dude. Is he wearing a Members Only jacket?? Okay, maybe not, but it’s damn close. The one thing about Chris - he’s got the nasal twang down. Is that country? Whatever it is, it sucked. Hard.

Okay! Melinda Doolittle is singing “Trouble is a Woman” by Julie Reeves. Another one who looks super hot tonight. Man, a few weeks back I thought Melinda and LaKisha were on par with each other, but I think Melinda has pulled herself way ahead of that pack the past few weeks, especially tonight. Loved this performance. Loved it.

They saved the best for last! I am a bit concerned with how Blake Lewis will handle country week, but I’m still looking forward to it. I mean, hello, it’s Blake. Blake is singing “When The Stars Go Blue” by Tim McGraw. OMG!! YES! I love this song. I know it because Bono and The Corrs did this song and I just fell in love with it. Once again, Blake and I are on the same page with song choices. Hmmm. He’s rushing and ahead of the music a little bit. Calm down, Blake, honey, take it slowwww. I liked it, but I think I’m prejudiced. Let’s see what the judges have to say. Okay, Randy and Paula liked it a lot and Simon thought it was just okay. I’ll take it.

My favorites of the night were Jordin, Melinda and Blake, of course. I really hope those are our final three.

American Idol - J Lo Edition

Filed Under (Forever Young, Tunes) by Amy on 10-04-2007

Yo yo yo, it’s Jennifer Lopez coaching the top eight on American Idol tonight, dawg. The contestants are bringing the Latino this week, let’s see what they’ve got.

Melinda Doolittle is up first singing “Sway” and I hated it. Simon nailed it - her appearance just did her in. The singing wasn’t that great, either, but the hair and the whole get up aged her about 20 years. I just didn’t think this was a great performance, especially from what we’ve come to expect from her. Melinda also nailed it - she said she’s not sexy and she wasn’t lying.

LaKisha Jones is singing Conga with her boobs falling all out of her dress, lawdy. I have to say, I loved watching J Lo coaching the singers. She’s got a lot of charisma and has some good things to share with them. I thought I’d hate her, so color me surprised. Anyway, LaKisha did a pretty good job, but her dancing seemed really forced and she didn’t do so great with the breathing when moving around so much, either. This was just “eh” for me.

Singing “Smooth” is Chris Richardson, and you know what? I thought I was going to hate it, but I really enjoyed it. I could actually understand the words, which is something I can’t say for Santana’s version. Chris surprised me last week and this - could he be edging up on my two favorites? Hmm.

Oh this should be interesting. Haley Scarnato is going to sing “Turn The Beat Around”. She needed Blake to help her in rehearsal if that gives you any indication of how it’s going to go. Oh my goodness, is she wearing… satin “hot pant” shorts? Yes, yes she is. She’s got a great set of legs, but that was one unflattering shot from behind when she went up on the catwalk. Yeah, so the singing sucked, as usual. And funnily enough, when Simon called her on her strategy of wearing the least amount of clothes, she smirked. She’s totally counting on the horny male vote. Next!

Jennifer Lopez keeps talking about the goosebump factor - and that has always been my guide where American Idol is concerned. If I get goosebumps, it was good. Simple as that.

Let’s see if Phil Stacey can give me the same goosebumps he gave J Lo singing “Maria Maria”. And the answer to that would be a great big, “Uh, no.” Sorry, Phil, I think your time here is done.

Okay, back to something more appeasing to my ears. Jordin Sparks is singing “The Rhythm is Gonna Get You” and while I didn’t get goosebumps, it was worlds better than what Haley and Phil just did. I liked it, as usual, but didn’t love it. Jordin is such a beautiful girl, I could just watch her all the time. But she’s going to have to get rid of that cumberbund. Yikes.

My boy is up next! Blake Lewis is singing “I Need To Know” - oooh, I love this song and it’s perfect for him! I think this is one of the reasons I like him so much - we have the same taste in music, it seems like. I have to get the comments about his get-up out of the way first. What is that ruffled blouse and pseudo white straw hat? Come on, Blake, baby. You’re so close to being IT. And about being “it” - see how he moves and commands that stage? He’s got it - star power. Love him.

They saved the best for last. Sanjaya Malakar is singing something something “Mucho”. I actually have no idea what the name of the song is. Does it really matter? Whoa. Where’d that facial hair come from? Damn, he’s got some nice teeth, huh? I can see why the teenage girls are going crazy for this kid with the way he looks tonight. Kind of. That overt eye-humping he keeps giving the cameras is about to make me sick, though. I think this was actually a good performance for him! Can he go home this week, though? Please? Are we sick of Sanjaya fever yet?

Going home tomorrow will probably be Phil Stacey.

Keith Richards - Did He or Didn’t He?

Filed Under (Forever Young, Tunes) by Amy on 04-04-2007

By now you’ve no doubt heard the stories about Keith Richards snorting his dad’s ashes mixed in with his cocaine. Keith is saying there is no truth to that story and that he can’t believe anyone ever thought he was being serious when he said that. Um, dude? You’re Keith F’n Richards. Anything is possible here. I’m still torn with my beliefs about him having done it. Maybe he did, but is reneging on the story because of the flack he’s received about it. You never know with this dude. I’m hoping that the story is entirely false, as he claims it is now, though. I can sleep easier at night with that scenario.

American Idol - Tony Bennett Week

Filed Under (Forever Young, Tunes) by Amy on 03-04-2007

I have to admit I’m not entirely familiar with Tony Bennett’s work, so I’m not sure what to expect this week except maybe some old fashioned, swingy type tunes. I’m not too excited about the show tonight since I most likely won’t know most of the songs. Mr. Bennett seems like a really cool guy. It’s an honor for these kids to get to work with him.

First up is Blake Lewis singing “Mack the Knife”. I think he did a good job, but it wasn’t my favorite performance by him. Hated the outfit.

And speaking of outfits, what in the hell is Paula wearing? She’s got on a black and white striped suit jacket that maybe Martha Stewart made while she was serving time, and if the jacket isn’t bad enough, she’s wearing a hideous red and white kerchief wrapped around her neck. Ick.

Next idol is Phil Stacey singing “Night and Day”. Started out purposely quiet, I’m sure, but kind of scary. He got better towards the middle and finished out nicely, but he was so stiff. He looks good tonight in his suit, at least.

Melinda Doolittle is up next singing “I Got Rhythm”. Oh sugar, who told you that dress was okay to wear tonight? They lied to you, whoever it was. And whoever told you to stay a background singer also lied. You are fantastic, girlfriend!

Wearing a cheesy top hat is Chris Richardson singing “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”. Although I hated his outfit with that hat, vest, and jeans combo, he sang the hell out of that song. Very nice job! I was surprised. Blake better watch out.

My girl, Jordin Sparks, is up next singing “On A Clear Day”. Now that’s what I’m talking about! She sounded great, she looked great, she is just fantastic. I read today that Ryan Seacrest predicted Jordin would win this competition and I wouldn’t be surprised if she did.

It will be interesting to see how gothic Gina Glocksen handles this genre. She is singing “Smile” by Nat King Cole. She looks atrocious.. Her hair has two braids on the top right side of her hair, her makeup looks like a clown, and the tongue ring just doesn’t fit with singing a song like this. Randy and Paula liked her understated style, but I sided with Simon on this - her vocals were very weak.

Here we go! Sanjaya is singing “Cheek to Cheek” and is dressed like he just walked off the Miami Vice set. White suit, black shirt underneath and a modern version of saddle shoes completes his outfit. I think I like his hair this week, at least, slicked back and neat. I love how the judges still don’t even attempt to give him realistic feedback. Simon is trying reverse psychology - nice try, Simon!

Knowing she needs to get the votes for her looks is Haley Scarnato wearing a skimpy, sexy, green, shimmery short dress. Blah. You aren’t fooling me, babe, I know your singing sucks. Haley’s body is to her singing as winning the million dollar lottery is to being homeless. She sang “Ain’t Misbehavin” and destroyed it, as expected.

Finishing out the show is LaKisha Jones singing “Stormy Weather”. Damn, she’s got some gigantic boobs, doesn’t she? She sang wonderfully, as usual - no surprises there. It’s going to be interesting to see who is the favorite between LaKisha and Melinda when the time comes.

Going home tomorrow will most likely be Haley.
